The magic ingredient here is Dan Schaffer’s sly script, which constantly undercuts the film’s inherently sexist premise.

In Manhattan, the middle-aged writer, art critic and professor and aspirant piano player and photographer David Kepesh (Ben Kingsley) questions that his age does not affect his sex drive and recalls words of Bette Davis ("Old age is not for sissies") and Tostoi ("The biggest surprise in a man's life is old age"). Despite of his great culture, the intellectual David is a man that has grown old but never grown up, and he is unable to last a relationship, including with his oncologist son Kenneth Kepesh (Peter Sarsgaard). The exceptions are his old poet friend and confident George O'Hearn (Dennis Hopper) and the independent businesswoman Carolyn (Patricia Clarkson), with whom he has an affair for more than twenty years. When he meets the elegant, educated and gorgeous Cuban student Consuela Castillo (Penélope Cruz) in his literature class, he feels a great sexual attraction for her and seduces her in the end of the period. They have a love affair for one and half years, but David is always insecure being thirty and something years older than the student. When Consuela forces David to come to her graduation party and meet her family and friends, he takes a decision that affects their relationship forever.

The film recounts the fictional tale of a King during Korea’s Goryeo Dynasty (918-1392). At the time depicted in the film, the Goryeo Dynasty was subordinate to the Mongolian Yuan Dynasty. In order to keep the throne the King needs to produce a son, lest the Yuan Dynasty enthrones the King’s cousin. The King is unable to perform with women and instead asks his childhood friend and closest bodyguard Hong-Rim, who is also his lover, to sleep with the Queen and produce an offspring on his behalf. A devastating love triangle between the King, Hong-Rim and the Queen is the result. It’s a movie of steamy (heterosexual and homosexual sex), bloody violence and beautiful traditional Korean clothes and striking cinematography.

Following the success of his television biography ‘The Naked Civil Servant’ Quentin Crisp is invited to America to lecture on How To Be Happy, and falls in love with New York’s more permissive ambience. Agent Connie Clausen enables him to be a ‘resident alien’, writing film reviews and dispensing words of wisdom. Curious about but impervious to trends, he describes AIDS as a “fad, nothing more”, actually to divert heterosexual anger but he is misinterpreted and reviled by many gays. A return to popularity occurs when he helps Patrick Angus, a young,AIDS-afflicted artist attain fame for his paintings and his healthy cynicism is marketed by performance artist Penny Arcade, putting him back in the limelight. Poor health causes him to refuse a lecture tour of England but he gives a triumphant final audience at a gay club in Tampa.A postscript informs that he died at the age of 91
